Although some negative notions exist about Secretarial and Personal Assistant (PA) work, careers many think are limited to making coffee for the boss and answering phones, experts believe the two jobs still offer many opportunities for growth.
According to Miyanda Maimbo, a Human Resource consultant, many opportunities exist in the secretarial field and the profession is growing.
“I want to encourage those that are studying towards a secretarial qualification that they have made a good choice. There are many opportunities and the profession is growing like any other,” she said.
“Today, we find Personal Assistants with MBAs, degrees and taking on senior positions in the organisation. Gone are the days when secretaries were needed just to type and take minutes. Today’s secretary is expected to think outside the box and be part of the decision-making process.”
She said organisations know that the two professions are essential for the efficient running of an organisation.
“These professionals are able to prepare reports that you have no idea how to do, keep files you ask to be destroyed, forgetting that you will need the files again. They remember dates, phone numbers, messages, appointments and schedules that you forget.”
