Surviving in today’s economy depends on how economically creative one is. There are limited opportunities in the Formal Sector, while the Informal Sector has endless opportunities. All you require is creativity and innovation.  

According to Agnes Kayungwa, a labour market expert, the Informal Sector has enormous opportunities that can transform one’s livelihood. 

Kayungwa says all what is needed is determination, courage and a sober mind to harness these opportunities.

She pointed out, “We have a whole lot of opportunities for us to start our own business ventures or create employment for ourselves. We are able to make a living out of many available options. All you need is to get assertive and confront the market.” 

Kayungwa suggests the following as some of the options that are available in the Informal Sector.

  • Farming 
  • Tailoring 
  • Carpentry 
  • Fishing 
  • Auto mechanics  
  • Curio and basket making
  • Painting and arts
  • Event planning 
  • Baking (wedding cakes and other special events)
  • Charcoal burning 
  • Shoe mending 
  • Blacksmithing 
  • Modelling 
  • Brick making and laying 
  • Welding
  • Airtime dispensing  
  • Street vending 
  • Car washing and tyre mending
  • Upholstery 
  • Hair plaiting and weaving 
  • Singing (as a recording artist)
  • Consultancy 
  • Freelancing (in field of expertise like journalism, law, etc)
  • Cross border trading
