Poor working conditions and meager salaries. This is the plight that faces many Zambian workers, and these frustrations force some workers to quit their jobs to run small businesses.

Unfortunately, such companies which are built on frustration and poor planning can go under, very quickly.  It is therefore important to think carefully about the amount of investment that goes into starting a business and the changes it brings to income.

Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself before quitting your day job.

  • What is my monthly expenditure like? For example, utility bills, rent and house payment?
  • How much money do I have to start my business? If not enough, do I have anything I can sell to meet the shortfall? If that is not an option, where will I get the deficit?
  • Who else depends on my income and what impact will this have on them? If I do not make any money for several months, are we going to starve?
  • As I plan on quitting this job, am I considering problems that could come up and that cost money, such as illness, home and car repairs or death?
  • Do members of my family depend on my time, providing help with school work, cooking and other various house tasks? If so, is there a person available to take care of these responsibilities if and when I start and when my company begins to operate?
