53% translators, interpreters have permanent contract

Workers in this occupation who have a permanent contract for the work they are performing, add up to 53%. This becomes clear through Mywage.org/Zambia research, presented on the occasion of International Press Freedom Day.

People in this job with 25 years of work experience earn the highest salary: between K6,796 and K35,782 per month. 20 years of work experience reaps employees a salary ranging from K7,333 to K32,818 per month.

Translators, interpreters mostly female

Of the respondents, 60% are female and 40% are male. 60% of employees have 1 child or more. Workers in this occupation who answered the survey are mostly between 24 and 29 years of age.

Average working week of 37 hours

Coverage by collective bargaining amongst workers is 14%, while 86% are not covered by a collective agreement, according to our survey. On average, people in this job work 37 hours per week.

72% of translators, interpreters fewer than 5 years of work experience

47% of workers state that they have no permanent contract for their job. 72% of employees have worked fewer than 5 years since their first job. Of the participating workers, 35% work in a multinational organisation. The majority of employees work in organisations of 500 or more employees. In most cases, workers report that the majority of their coworkers are female. 53% of people in this job state that they have a permanent contract for the work that they are doing.

In the survey, 8% of the employees choose 'highly satisfied' as their job satisfaction level. In general, most employees are in between satisfied and dissatisfied with their position. This is the case for 35% of the employees.

Wage dissatisfaction high among translators, interpreters

Of all surveyed workers, 23% feel in between satisfied and dissatisfied about their salary. 49% of the employees reports to be dissatisfied with their wage.
