What is training or retraining?

Training or retraining may refer to employees upgrading of their skills in relation to job requirements, or when one wants to explore a new career. Hence it is the act of enhancing one’s knowledge and skills.

Training can be on-the-job training, or external training - where one enrolls in an institution of learning.

Why should I undergo training or retraining?

A number of reasons can lead someone to undertake training and they include:

  • To keep up with new technologies
  • The need to upgrade skills to match job demands
  • The desire to change career
  • The prospect of exploring new opportunities
  • To get promotion.

Is it worthwhile to invest in my own training or should I rely on my employer?

Yes. It’s worthwhile to invest in your own training especially when the reasons to train include to keep up with new technologies, the desire to change career, and/or the prospect of exploring new opportunities.

For on-the-job training, this can be provided by employers especially when they want workers to keep up with new technologies, or if there is a need to upgrade skills to match job demands.

Can my employer pay for my training?

Yes. Some employers do pay for retraining programmes that are done by government and various agencies/organisations for their workers. Some organisations even have policies related to training of staff to upgrade skills to match job demands and new technologies.
