What is commuting time?

The time it takes for a worker to get to and from work.

Is this covered by any labour laws?

The labour laws of Ghana have no provision for the payment of commuting time. Generally commuting time in Ghana ranges between 1 – 2 hours from home to work and back respectively, especially in Accra.

Does the period form part of working hours?

This period does not form part of working hours and therefore is not paid.

Should commuting hours be paid?

It is only covered at instances where provision is made by respective organisations to meet commuting costs in terms of transport and fuel subsidies.

What if the commuting time takes up more than a working day?

No provision is made for this. Normally it would be considered as lateness and sanctions would be applied.

What does the law say about commuting time?

There is no such provision in the law, but as earlier indicated most organisations have made provisions for re-imbursement of transport costs, provision of transport to commute workers daily and in some instances payment for petrol.
