What does the law say in relation to property ownership, gender and age?

Article 26 of the Constitution of Uganda guarantees the right of every person to own property either individually or in association with others. On the one hand this implicitly confirms women’s equal right to own property, but on the other hand confirms a husband’s right to own property already registered in his name.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of property ownership?

Property ownership has a number of advantages and disadvantages for men and women. Some of the advantages include:

  • Potential borrowing power
  • Security and pride,
  • Tax deductions
  • Cash returns on the initial investment
  • Having a permanent asset whose value increases.

Disadvantages may include:

  • Maintenance costs
  • A decline in value
  • Limited flexibility of some assets such as land
  • Taxes and utility bills.
