How to write a great CV in Ireland

Are you wondering how to write the perfect CV for Ireland? The first impression you make on your new potential recruiter is often all in your CV.

How should my CV be divided?

  1. Personal information. Mention your full name and contact information (email and phone number). Any other details are unnecessary, even a photo of yourself.
  2. Short summary. Write an overview of your expertise and assets that could be of benefit to the company (3-5 sentences).
  3. Skillset. Share the skills you are naturally good at or the ones you have gained through your past jobs and educational background.
  4. Work history. List your previous employments that are related to the job you are applying to. Make sure to mention the name, employer, key achievements and tasks. Do start from the most recent.
  5. Education. Go through your school, university, degrees, qualifications, etc.
  6. Additional information - include hobbies, activities, charity work or anything that is relevant and would make you stand out.
  7. References. Do not include them in your CV, but make sure you mention that they would be ready if requested.

How do I design my CV?

  • You can find free CV templates on Microsoft Word (Windows) or Pages (MacBook).
  • If you want something a bit more original, check for free templates on the web.
  • Make sure you don’t overwrite. Two pages would be a good length.
  • Use basic and common fonts.
  • Keep it simple and neat. Don’t exaggerate with the design.

Should I include a cover letter in Ireland?

Yes. It gives you the opportunity to write more about yourself, before the interview stage. It should include:

  • The date, the name and the email address of the recruiter.
  • Salutations.
  • Paragraphs in which you talk more about your experience, why you would be a perfect fit for the company, your enthusiasm to join their team and how you would achieve their objectives.
  • A closing.
  • A signature (your full name is enough).
