Marriage is one of many options available to young women as they grow up, leave school and start thinking about their futures. But it is not, by any means, the only option. Developing a career, finding a job that you really love, and being aware of exciting opportunities in the work market are all options that are equally, if not more important.

A young woman who is a nurse and has just completed her Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery at St Lukes School of Nursing, Kettie Gausi, says unfortunately many young women feel getting married is the only way to achieve success.

“We need to have a goal and a target in life. For instance, when our parents are sending us to school we need to know the benefits of a good education,” she said.

The 26-year-old woman said there was more to life for young women than only thinking about marriage. She added that all girls were capable of climbing the ladder of success, provided they had a goal.

“Girls need to have a goal; the same as when you eat you want to satisfy your stomach. If you are going to school you have to have a purpose and not because your parents are forcing you,” she explained.

24-year-old Estiner Katengeza, who holds a Bachelors degree in Environmental Health, says young women are perfectly capable of supporting themselves.

“Sometimes girls think they will be supported by their husbands within marriage, but things are getting tougher. Girls need to have reliable careers,” advises Katengeza.

26-year-old Patricia Mpinganjira, who also holds a Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery, says gone are the days when young women only focused on marriage. These days careers were even more important.

“These days a good marriage works when you both have careers, because you support each other,” she said.
