At the age of 19, Blantyre-based Martha Chimphamba is an ambitious young lady who is determined to become an accountant one day. She is pursuing a career which has always been said to be difficult because it specifically requires a high standard of mathematics. But Martha is not afraid; she is currently studying for an accounting diploma at college in Blantyre.

“A lot of young women go into the arts, but I wanted to be different and face the challenge of studying in a difficult field,” she said.

To qualify to study accounting one needs to pass the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) well, and furthermore get good grades in mathematics.

In Malawi there are several colleges where one can study accounting, including the University of Malawi’s Polytechnic and the Malawi College of Accountancy.

There are few women who are currently pursuing accounting careers in Malawi. But there are inspiring examples of women in finance, including Mary Nkosi, who is currently Malawi’s deputy Reserve Bank Governor.

“Some of my peers have discouraged me from continuing with accounting, but I am set on proving them wrong. I intend to become a chartered accountant and possibly open my own accounting firm one day,” said Martha.
