효소(酵素, 영어: enzyme)는 기질과 결합해서 효소-기질 복합체를 형성하여 화학 반응의 활성화 에너지를 낮춤으로써 물질대사의 속도를 증가시키는 생체 촉매이다. 그리고 경우에 따라 속도를 조절하는 생체 보호기능을 수행하기도 한다. 효소는 기질을 생성물로 알려진 다른 분자로 전환시킨다. 세포의 거의 모든 대사 과정은 생명을 유지할 수 있을 만큼의 빠른 속도로 일어나야 하기 때문에 효소 촉매작용을 필요로 한다. 대사 경로는 효소에 의존하여 개별 단계들을 촉매한다. 효소에 대해 연구하는 학문을 효소학이라고 하며, 최근에 유사효소(pseudoenzyme) 분석의 새로운 분야가 성장하여 진화 과정에서 일부 효소가 생물학적 촉매 능력을 상실했다는 것을 알게 되었으며, 이는 종종 유사효소의 아미노산 서열과 특이한 유사촉매(pseudocatalytic) 특성에 기인한다.
