Salary Calculator FAQs

How are the actual wages of low, medium and skilled workers arrived at in the Salary Calculator?

There are a few steps to this. The application ‘Wages In Context’ first compares the income and the cost of living of working people and their families. Second, the reported monthly wages of workers are arrived at through information from voluntary web surveys collected in the last five years. In particular, “low skilled”, “medium skilled” and “high skilled” workers are respectively classified using the ISCO classification mode of professions; ISCO 1-3 indicates a highly skilled worker, ISCO 4-8 indicates a medium skilled worker and ISCO 9 means a low skilled worker. The range for each worker type represents many different job characteristics that influence worker wages.

What is an occupation or an occupation group?

WageIndicator recognises more than 4,000 different occupations. It uses the classification of ISCO from 2008, which is provided by the International Labour Organization. Albeit this is the latest classification, WageIndicator continues to amend this definition whenever necessary. ISCO classifies jobs into separate groups according to the tasks, duties and job descriptions that the job requires. Top level occupations are also categorised into ten main occupation group categories; these categories have further subsets of professions that they are broken down into.

Why is education important for wages?

Education is highly important in the context of wages since it directly correlates with and causes the probability of earning higher wages. Those with a greater educational background and high literacy skills are likely to have greater skills in the job, are more likely to be efficient and can make for preferable employees. Employees with a high education level can be assigned more complicated or intense responsibilities, which, along with the prospect of promotion or reaching higher positions within the organisation, can have a significant impact on their pay.
