What is a CV?

A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a detailed summary of your achievements, training, experience, skills and interests, which you compile for a potential employer when searching for a job. It is a way to “sell” yourself and your achievements.

Do I use the same CV for all job applications?

No, this is not a good idea. Ideally, you should tailor-make your CV to suit the job you are applying for, making sure to stress the relevant strong points that a particular company is looking for.

How long should my CV be?

Generally no longer than two sides of A4 paper.

How should my CV be presented?

It should be carefully and clearly laid out. It should be neat. Use bold text for headings. Use bullet-points when you can.

Should I keep my CV updated?
Yes. Make sure that all up to date information is included. Your potential boss will notice this.

What should my CV include?

  • Your name and contact address
  • The correct name and address of your potential employer
  • A detailed list of your previous experience, emphasising relevant skills and related accomplishments
  • Any degrees, diplomas or specialised training
  • If you have done internships, mention this
  • References (if you are straight out of school or college, you can get references from a teacher or lecturer)

Mention how you would like to follow up – for example, that you would be pleased to have an interview, or to answer any relevant questions regarding your CV and experience

What should my CV not include?

  • An informal tone
  • Spelling and grammar mistakes
  • Lengthy text – keep things to the point
  • Photographs
  • Mention of salary, unless requested
  • Personal details – for example, about your partner or family
  • Exaggerations about your skills
